Sonata á deux Guitar and Piano 30'
three movements
Premiere Greifenberg 11.11. 2012 Wulfin Lieske, guitar Sigrid Trummer, piano
Composition commissioned by the Greifenberger Institute of Organology
Sonata á deux is part of my “Humus compositions” body of works, in a serial procedure developed by me in 1999, in which time (rhythm) controls frequency (tone pitches). The use of historical instruments (romantic guitar and fortepiano) was prompted by Helmut Balk for Greifenberger Institute of Organology, who commissioned the piece. This historical duo combination inspired me to compose a three-movement classical work with quick sonata main movement, a slow theme and variations and finale of a rondo-style ‘perpetuum mobile’. I contrast the classical-tonal material (in tribute to Beethoven) with “humus” tonal material based on a twelve-tone row. In this by all means historicising dialectic apparently irreconcilable worlds achieve a novel synthesis.
